This statue of Robert the Bruce is just outside the gates to Stirling Castle. Robert I, popularly known as Robert the Bruce, was King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. Along with William Wallace Robert was one of the two most famous warriors of his generation and in all of Scottish history. The William Wallace monument can be seen atop a wooded hill in the distance. Both men were pivotal in the war fought to regain freedom and independence for Scotland and her people from the British crown. Robert the Bruce and the Scottish army defeated the English forces at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 to fully set Scotland free - at least for a time. Robert the Bruce reigned as King Robert I of Scotland from 1306 until his Death in 1329,. Statues of both men adorn the entrance to Edinburgh Castle 40 miles east of Stirling.
